Timing an Old Age Security (OAS) application is slightly unusual because you may not need to submit one at all. Automatic enrolment comes first, so the right time to act depends on what happens around your 64th birthday. In 2026, wait until one month after your 64th birthday to confirm whether you need to apply for OAS. If you receive a letter telling you to apply, submit your application. If no enrolment letter has arrived by that point, contact the OAS program to find out whether an application is required.
Check Your OAS Enrolment Before Applying
Most people do not need to apply when enough information is available to enrol them automatically. An OAS enrolment letter is sent around the 64th birthday when this applies. The letter tells you that you have been enrolled and provides the information that will be used for your pension.
This makes applying unnecessarily early a common timing mistake. The 2026 online application is not available until you are at least one month past your 64th birthday anyway. Our separate article on whether OAS starts automatically at 65 covers how automatic enrolment works.
Apply Once You Know an Application Is Required
A letter asking you to apply is the clearest signal to proceed. At that point, there is little reason to leave the application sitting unfinished if you intend to begin OAS when you become eligible. You can use My Service Canada Account when you meet the online requirements or use the paper process.
How you submit the application is a separate issue from when you submit it. We explain the steps in how to apply for Old Age Security.
You also need to act if the information in your automatic-enrolment letter is incorrect. Under the 2026 Old Age Security Act, corrections must be provided before you turn 65. Waiting until payments begin can therefore leave an avoidable problem that could have been addressed beforehand.
What If You Are Already 65 and Have Not Applied?
Do not assume that reaching 65 eventually triggers OAS without any action. If you have turned 65 and your pension has neither started nor been deliberately postponed, the 2026 OAS process specifically identifies this as a situation requiring action.
A late application can sometimes produce payments for an earlier period. The Old Age Security Act permits an approved application made after 65 to take effect earlier, subject to its statutory limits and the date you became qualified. Because those rules depend on the individual application, we would not treat retroactivity as a reason to postpone applying after discovering that your pension never started.
Applying Later Because You Want to Delay OAS
Choosing a later OAS start date is different from accidentally applying late. Under the 2026 OAS rules, the pension can begin at 65 or be postponed as late as age 70. Someone who has been automatically enrolled but wants a later start date must actively delay the pension rather than simply ignore the enrolment letter.
The financial effect of postponement belongs in a separate decision. Our guide to deferring OAS covers that calculation without turning an application-timing question into a retirement-planning article.
Other Questions About When to Apply for OAS
Can you apply for OAS before your 64th birthday?
The 2026 online OAS application is not available that early. Online applications require you to be at least one month past your 64th birthday.
Should you wait for your OAS application to be approved before making retirement plans?
Your decision letter confirms the date of your first payment and any past payments owed. Until a submitted application has been assessed, you can check its status through My Service Canada Account rather than treating submission itself as approval.
Can you change the start date after you have already applied?
Yes. The 2026 application process allows you to request a change to your OAS start date after applying. You need to contact the OAS program to make that request.
What if you are applying from outside Canada?
The timing still depends on when you want the pension to begin and whether an application is required, but the submission process differs because the regular online OAS application is not available from outside Canada. See applying for OAS outside Canada for that process.
Once you are one month past your 64th birthday, check the letter you received or confirm your enrolment status if nothing arrived. That single check tells you whether there is an OAS application waiting for you to complete.
