How Much Can You Get From OAS and GIS Together?

For July to September 2026, a single, widowed or divorced person aged 65 to 74 can receive up to $1,875.14 per month from Old Age Security (OAS) and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) combined. The maximum is not universal, however. Your actual total depends on your OAS entitlement, income, age and marital status.

Maximum OAS and GIS Combined Amounts for 2026

The table below combines the July to September 2026 federal OAS and GIS maximums. These are monthly amounts for someone entitled to a full OAS pension and the maximum GIS for their situation.

Your situationOASGISMaximum combined monthly amount
Single, widowed or divorced, age 65 to 74$751.97$1,123.17$1,875.14
Single, widowed or divorced, age 75+$827.17$1,123.17$1,950.34
Spouse or partner receives full OAS, age 65 to 74$751.97$676.09$1,428.06
Spouse or partner receives full OAS, age 75+$827.17$676.09$1,503.26
Spouse or partner receives the Allowance, age 65 to 74$751.97$676.09$1,428.06
Spouse or partner does not receive OAS or the Allowance, age 65 to 74$751.97$1,123.17$1,875.14

The higher total after age 75 comes from the automatic increase to the OAS pension. That age-based OAS increase does not reduce the recipient’s GIS amount.

These rates are reviewed quarterly for changes in the cost of living, so the amounts can change in January, April, July and October. Our separate explanation of OAS inflation adjustments covers how those quarterly changes work.

Why You May Receive Less Than the Maximum

The maximum combined figure assumes you qualify for both maximum components. Your OAS amount may be lower if you receive a partial pension because of your Canadian residence history.

GIS is more directly affected by income. For the July to September 2026 payment quarter, a single, divorced or widowed recipient must have annual income below $22,800 to receive GIS. The applicable GIS income limits differ for couples according to the spouse or common-law partner’s situation. As income rises, the supplement can fall below its maximum even while the recipient continues receiving OAS.

One useful detail when estimating the total is that OAS itself is excluded from the income used to determine GIS. The 2026 GIS income calculation also provides an earnings exemption for employment and self-employment income. The first $5,000 is exempt, along with 50% of the next $10,000. These rules are built into the Old Age Security Act’s definition of income.

For a personalized estimate rather than a maximum figure, use an OAS and GIS calculator with your income and household situation.

What Is the Maximum for a Couple Receiving OAS and GIS?

When both spouses or common-law partners receive full OAS pensions and each qualifies for the maximum GIS available to a pensioner whose partner receives OAS, their combined household maximum for July to September 2026 is $2,856.12 per month if both are aged 65 to 74.

That household figure should not be confused with the maximum shown for an individual. GIS for a couple is determined using their combined income, so a couple’s actual payments can be lower. The dedicated OAS vs. GIS comparison explains the different roles of the two benefits without duplicating the payment calculations here.

Before budgeting around any maximum, check the current quarter’s rates and estimate the payment using your actual household income rather than assuming the published ceiling is what you will receive.

Other Questions About Combined OAS and GIS Payments

Can you receive GIS if you have a partial OAS pension?

Yes. Receiving a partial OAS pension does not by itself prevent you from qualifying for GIS. However, the standard maximum-payment tables are not designed to calculate payments for partial OAS recipients, so the combined amount should be determined using the applicable partial-pension calculation.

Does the OAS clawback reduce GIS for a high-income senior?

GIS normally disappears at income levels far below those at which the OAS recovery tax begins. The two income tests therefore address very different income ranges. You can see the separate OAS clawback rules if your concern is repayment of OAS rather than GIS eligibility.

Can you get the maximum GIS if you have employment income?

Possibly. Under the 2026 GIS rules, the employment and self-employment earnings exemption means earning some money does not automatically reduce GIS. The exact result depends on the amount and type of income included in the GIS calculation.
