Applying for Old Age Security (OAS) is not something everyone has to do. Some people are automatically enrolled. However, if you need to submit an application, you can generally apply online through My Service Canada Account or complete a paper application and send it by mail.
In 2026, you can apply for OAS online by signing in to My Service Canada Account (MSCA), opening the Old Age Security section and selecting “Apply for Old Age Security and manage my benefits.” If you cannot use the online application, complete the ISP-3550 paper form and submit it to the appropriate Service Canada office.
Before starting either route, make sure you actually need to apply. You may receive an automatic-enrolment letter around your 64th birthday. If no letter arrives within one month after that birthday, check whether you need to apply rather than assuming an application is required. We cover the automatic-enrolment rules separately in does OAS start automatically at 65?.
What You Need Before Starting Your OAS Application
The 2026 application asks for information needed to establish your pension and, where applicable, assess related benefits. Gather details about where you have lived since age 18 and the date you want your pension to begin. If you have a spouse or common-law partner, you may also need their Social Insurance Number and date of birth.
Depending on your circumstances, you may need residence information for the previous two years, foreign income details, and information about recent reductions in employment or pension income. Income information for the previous two years may also be required when you have not filed Canadian income tax returns. Banking details are needed if you want to arrange direct deposit. The exact supporting paperwork can vary, so our separate guide covers the documents and forms needed for an OAS application without duplicating that list here.
How to Apply for Old Age Security Online
The 2026 online OAS application is available through My Service Canada Account (MSCA). You can use this route only if you are at least one month past your 64th birthday, are not already receiving OAS, have not previously applied or your application is still being assessed, and do not have a third party such as a trustee or power of attorney managing your OAS account.
Sign in to MSCA or create an account. From the dashboard, go to the Old Age Security section and select “Apply for Old Age Security and manage my benefits.” Follow the application prompts and provide the requested information. The MSCA pension service also lets you manage certain pension information after applying.
Online is the route we would choose when it is available. It avoids printing, signing and mailing a package, while keeping the application inside the same account you can later use to check your OAS application status.
How to Apply for Old Age Security by Mail
For a paper application, complete the Application for the Old Age Security Pension and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (ISP-3550). The current OAS application page provides access to the form and its reference guide.
A downloaded fillable form still has to be printed and signed. Complete every section that applies to you, sign required sections with a pen, and attach any required certified true copies of supporting documents. Extra blank paper can be attached if the space provided on the form is insufficient.
Where you mail the package depends on where you live. The OAS mailing addresses are organized by province or territory, with Ontario divided by postal-code area. Sending the application to the correct office is worth checking immediately before mailing rather than relying on an address saved from an older form.
Applying for OAS From Outside Canada
You cannot use the regular online OAS application when applying from outside Canada in 2026. A paper application is required.
Send the completed application to the Service Canada office for the Canadian province or territory where you last lived. International cases can involve additional residence information, so the application route is separate from the rules determining whether you can receive OAS while living outside Canada.
When Someone Else Is Helping With Your Application
Someone can be authorized to communicate about your OAS file using the Consent to Communicate Information to an Authorized Person form (ISP-1603). That permission alone does not allow the person to apply for benefits for you, change your payment address, or request changes to tax withholding.
Different paperwork applies when a person cannot manage their own pension and benefits. The 2026 process requires a medical professional to complete the Certificate of Incapability OAS/CPP (ISP-3505). An individual administrator then uses ISP-3506, while an agency, charitable organization or municipality uses ISP-3507. These forms are available through the official OAS application process.
Other Questions About Applying for OAS
Can you submit an OAS application in person instead of mailing it?
Yes. A completed application and supporting documents can also be submitted at a Service Canada Centre. The broader public-pension application service recognizes online, mail and in-person submission options.
What happens after you submit an OAS application?
A decision is sent by mail, or you may be contacted for additional information or documents needed to process the application. Processing time is a separate issue, so see how long an OAS application takes if you are planning around a particular start date.
Can you apply online if a power of attorney manages your OAS account?
No. The 2026 MSCA application is unavailable when a third party, such as a power of attorney or trustee, manages your OAS account. You need to use the paper process instead.
Can you change the OAS start date after submitting your application?
Yes. If you already applied and selected a start date, you can contact the OAS program to request a different date. The financial rules around postponing the pension are covered separately in OAS deferral.
Before submitting, check the current application page and make sure you are using the latest form, have completed every applicable section and have included any required supporting documents.
