How to Check Your OAS Application Status

One easy mistake after applying for Old Age Security (OAS) is assuming you have to wait for a letter before finding out what is happening with your application. You can check your OAS application status online through My Service Canada Account (MSCA). Sign in, open the Old Age Security section and select “Apply for Old Age Security and manage my benefits.” Your OAS dashboard provides application updates and shows whether additional documents are required.

Where to Find Your OAS Application Status in MSCA

After you sign in or register for My Service Canada Account, go to the Old Age Security section on the dashboard. Select “Apply for Old Age Security and manage my benefits” to enter the OAS area of your account.

The most useful places to check are “Follow up item(s)” and “Notifications.” These areas show updates about your OAS application and tell you when documentation is needed to complete it. That makes them more useful than simply checking repeatedly for a final approval.

You can use MSCA to monitor an application whether you originally applied for OAS online or submitted a paper application. The online account is therefore useful even when the application itself was not filed through MSCA.

What to Do When MSCA Says More Information Is Required

A request for additional information means the application cannot yet be completed with the information currently on file. Follow the instructions attached to the request rather than starting another OAS application.

Supporting documents can be submitted online through MSCA. Check exactly what has been requested before uploading anything because the required evidence depends on the individual application. Our separate guide covers the documents and forms used for OAS applications if you need more detail about that part of the process.

How You Receive the Final OAS Decision

The online status tracker is useful while your application is under review, but the formal outcome arrives separately. After a decision is made, you receive a letter by mail showing your approved monthly amount, first payment date and any past payments owed.

If your application has been pending longer than expected, the absence of a decision by itself does not establish that something is wrong. OAS does not have one processing time that applies to every file. Our guide to how long an OAS application takes covers the timing separately.

What to Do If You Cannot Get an OAS Status Update Online

You can contact the OAS program when MSCA does not give you the information you need about your particular application. Telephone service is available within Canada and the United States at 1-800-277-9914, while a separate number is provided for calls from outside those countries.

This route is also useful when an account-access problem prevents you from using the online status service. For application-specific questions, have your Social Insurance Number available when you call, but do not include it in ordinary email or other unsecured correspondence.

Other Questions About Checking an OAS Application

Can someone else check your OAS application for you?

You can authorize another person to communicate with the OAS program on your behalf. Authorization can be managed through MSCA, but giving someone permission to communicate with the program does not transfer your entitlement to the benefit.

Can you see OAS payment information in MSCA after approval?

Yes. In the OAS dashboard, open the Payments section and select “All payments.” The current online service displays and allows you to print OAS payment information for payments made after March 17, 2025. Older payment information can be requested from the OAS program.

Do you need to create another MSCA account if you already use it for CPP?

No. My Service Canada Account provides access to several federal programs, including the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and OAS. Once signed in, use the OAS section of the existing account rather than registering again.

Can you check the status of a Guaranteed Income Supplement application in the same place?

Yes. OAS-related services in MSCA also cover the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS), including applications and benefit management. This is useful when OAS and GIS were requested together because both are handled within the OAS area of MSCA.
